Due to council cutbacks, many grassy areas, including those in local parks, are being left uncut. If not properly managed, these areas can become overgrown, unruly and actually prevent wildflowers from thriving. Due to council cutbacks, many grassy areas, including those in local parks, are being left uncut. If not properly managed, these areas can become overgrown, unruly and actually prevent wildflowers from thriving. With a bit of annual care from a dedicated group of community volunteers, these spaces can be transformed into native wildflower meadows and provide a better environment for pollinators. If you know of an area of grassland near you that could be managed in this way, then get in touch enquiries@ontheverge.co.uk . We can support you by helping you to seek permissions, come up with management plan, supply fresh wildflower seed ( including yellow rattle) and help any green-fingered volunteers sow wildflower plug plants to plant in the meadow.

After extensive research and testing, we’ve created a custom wildflower seed mix designed to enhance your space with beauty and support pollinators. With minimal management, this mix of native annuals and perennials provides a lasting nectar source for bees year after year. The species list can be found here
Studies undertaken by the University of Stirling show that our wildflower sites attract significantly more pollinators than traditional grass areas. After two years our sites have 25 times more flowers, 50 times more bumblebees, and 13 times more hoverflies than control sites ( short mown grass), and these numbers continue to grow as the plants mature. One such study can be found here.
We’re grateful for the ongoing support of the Unpaid Volunteers Service (formerly the Criminal Justice Service) in both Clackmannanshire and Stirling, for help in preparing many of our sites
We would like to thank Clackmannanshire and Stirling Environment Trust (CSET ) for continued support in funding our work .
